On a Lighter Note...

I need HELP! I have been out of control eating for a couple of weeks now, and the scale was abominable this morning. I couldn't believe my eyes. 6 pounds in a matter of days- like 4 days. Now I know you all are making excuses for me (the pregnant one does make me feel a little better), and I appreciate that. Even the doctor will probably have something to say about this, and I have to go on Thursday. Ugh.
Here's the problem. I downward spiral so quickly. After Christmas (I gained 5 pounds) I kinda lost control. I've gained 15 since. That's not okay, even for pregnant women.
Here's the root of the problem. I love sweets, especially baked ones. Since last Sunday I've made brownies, peanut butter cookies, (both for the 40th anniversary celebration) chocolate chip cookies and then last night I made cinnamon rolls. That's a LOT of baking, which means a lot of bites of dough, then of course a lot of eating what I bake. And I ate two donuts for breakfast yesterday. (One for me, one for Dax- makes sense, right?) Had to add that to the confession.
I feel a lot better now that that's off my chest. So this morning I ate Kashi-go-lean cereal for breakfast with a banana on top. Baby steps. It's time for change. Pray for me (and poor Dax, who will be born addicted to chocolate). Please feel free to help with advice and pointers for self-control in eating. I need help!
And I'm really hungry right now...

LOTS of water (it fills you up, kinda) eat more filling items that will not allow you to crave, like peanut butter and different proteins (nuts, chicken breast)and find snacks that are less fattening but will fulfill your snacky need. Pretzels, cereal, fruit, veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese with fruit. Hope that works!!

:)The whole time I am ready the blog I am beoming more and more hungry..... darn. My mom says eating Chocolate when you are pregnant makes a sweeter baby :) I like to believe she is correct! I have found that when I eat more protein early in the day I want to eat less sweet things later. So I try to add Peanut Butter sometime before lunch to something:)I understand your weakness though,I too LOVE sugar...

If you still want to bake, why not bake healthier sweet things, like oatmeal cookies made with honey instead of sugar with apple chunks in them or something like that? Of course, I say this as I'm sticking my sugar-laden apple pie in the oven. Sigh.

I feel you on this one, my friend! I have a super duper sweet tooth anyway, and when I was pregnant, I took all the liberties in the world to indulge myself. The doctor kept saying, "it will just be that much harder to shed the wait in the long run post-pregnancy". Boy was she right! Needless to say, Sosi is 8 months old and I'm still not back to my normal weight. Ugh!

Honestly, I never met a dessert I didn't like! Kristi gave great advice ... drink lots of water or during this cold weather, hot teas like Starbucks "passion tea" that's red and tart like juice or teas with caffeine with nonfat milk ... hot in the winter and iced in the summer. Use lots of cinnamon and spices and less sugar (raw sugar crystals is you can or Splenda if you must).
I don't know if you're doing any caffeine with the pregnancy but it helps keep hunger at bay some. You don't like veggies ... but how about cheddar flavored rice crackers?!! You can eat a whole bag and it's a fraction of a bag of chips! I get salt and sweet cravings so I do cheddar rice crackers (Ralphs or Quaker brand, buy them up when they have 10 for $10 special) and dark chocolates from Costco (shaped like those mints they leave on your pillow at hotels) ... they're only like 100 calories or so for 4 !!!
Eat everything ... but slowly with lots of liquids between bites ... and you'll end up eating less! Avoid wasted calories like juices and sodas ... and eat many SLIVERS of yummy baked goods with fruit, like berries! Do ice cream only by small spoonfuls and savour every bite!
Avoid processed carbs and get whole grain stuff. Oatmeal with dried fruit and cut up bananas in the morning holds you over a long time! Even as a snack! Eat a slice of toasted whole wheat bread with thinly spread peanut butter and sliced bananas for dessert (sound familiar?) ... or sometimes I pour chocolate syrup into a SMALL ramekin and dip my banana, raspberry, strawberry or cut up apple, pears as my sweet!
I learned all these tricks from a nutritionist as I was borderline diabetic during first pregnancy and am genetically predisposed to it. Also broke my back with spinal cord issues so need to keep weight to minimum. Hope you have fun experimenting! Bon appetite!

Hi Julie,
Sounds like you've gotten some good pointers. I am right there with you. If it weren't for Christian vomitting and diahrrhea all the time, I'd probably be eating chocolate by the lbs. and drinking my favorite - MILK! Baking is my favorite past time as well. I am going to e-mail you a cleanse that won't help you now or even while nursing BUT, hold onto it and when your ready to shed the post pregnancy weight, this will help you and re-alkaline your body. I did this (mainly because of my gall-bladder) but its also good to clean out your system and shrink you stomach. It Worked WONDERS for me! I too at the time was eating too much junk and this helped clean me out and I found I didn't crave sweets as much.

No pressure if you think - NO WAY on the cleanse. Just thought I'd send it. If you do decide to do it, let me know how it worked for you. I got it from my Mother In Law who is a nutritionist and who works for a Chinese Dr.

Oh, Julie . . . you make me smile. :-) Speaking as someone with some personal experiences related to your sweet cravings (remember that chocolate cake Christy made for me in college?), I won't try to talk you out of eating sweets AT ALL! Did you know that Weight Watchers makes some fairly yummy dessert foods that you can buy in the grocery store? We really like their ice cream bars (esp. the chocolate and "giant latte" flavors). They have about 100 calories and 1 gram of fat in each one, and they are super filling and rich. Weight Watchers also has other goodies like cookies, muffins, etc. Perhaps this way you can indulge a little (and give the little dude some calcium in the form of ice cream!) without some of the other unfortunate effects? Just a thought! --Liz
